A Show of Ceremony and of Strength
The day began with pomp. President Trump rolled out a red carpet and arranged a military flyover featuring F-22s and B-2s as Putin arrived. They greeted each other on the tarmac, smiling, shaking hands, and climbing into Trump’s armored vehicle known as “The Beast” for a symbolic drive together .
Warm Greetings, Sparse Results
In their joint news conference, both men used friendly language. Trump praised Putin and rated the meeting highly, calling it a “10.” Putin spoke first breaking customary protocol and portrayed the summit as a starting point toward better relations . Yet, beneath the warm tone, no deal was reached. Trump said, “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” while Putin referred to an “understanding,” warning European capitals not to disrupt progress .
Ukraine Left Waiting
Talks about Ukraine were expected to be central, but no pause or ceasefire was agreed. Putin insisted that “root causes” of the conflict like security arrangements and Ukraine’s NATO ambitions must be addressed first . Trump hinted at follow-up talks, including possible discussions with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and NATO leaders . Still, Ukraine has not seen any immediate commitments or progress .
Putin’s PR Win
Observers noted that even though the meeting took place on U.S. soil Putin seemed to emerge with stronger optics. He spoke first, portrayed confidence, and even joked about hosting the next meeting in Moscow. Trump responded, saying that could happen even though it might raise "a little heat" in the U.S. .
Diplomacy with Domestic Echoes
Rather than dwell on diplomacy, Trump used part of the platform to revisit familiar domestic complaints ranging from election claims to general grievances. Putin appeared to echo or support some of those views .
The War Continues
As summit optics played out, the war in Ukraine showed no signs of cooling. Russian military activity continued, and Ukrainian officials warned that the summit might have simply bought Putin more time to prepare further actions .
