James Ransone played Chester "Ziggy" Sobotka in the second season of The Wire. He portrayed this complex character, from a dock worker to a petty criminal, with such authenticity that he became one of the series' most memorable characters. He then starred in David Simon's other HBO series, Generation Kill, where he appeared alongside actor Alexander Skarsgård. In this series, he played real-life Marine Corporal Josh Ray Person.
In recent years, Ransone appeared as Eddie Kaspbrak in the horror film It Chapter Two. His performance in the film was widely praised, especially since the cast included big names like Bill Hader, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Skarsgård.
Fans and colleagues expressed their condolences on social media as soon as news of his passing broke. Actor François Arnaud wrote on Instagram, "RIP James Ransone. A unique actor, who continues to inspire and amaze me."
James Ransone was born in Baltimore in 1979. He studied at the Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Maryland. He got his first big break in the 2002 film Ken Park, followed by a role in The Wire a year later.
In 2021, Ransone revealed that he had been sexually abused by a former tutor as a child. He explained that this trauma had a profound impact on his life, and he later struggled with alcohol and heroin addiction. Despite filing a complaint in 2020, authorities did not take any criminal action.
In an interview, Ransone said about acting that he often had to play characters that were "unlikable," and that this left him mentally exhausted.
James Ransone's passing is a significant loss to the film and TV industry. His acting, honesty, and ability to humanize complex characters will always be remembered.
