North Dakota Tornado Alert: Residents Urged to Take Immediate Shelter

Residents across parts of eastern and southeastern North Dakota, along with northwest Minnesota, were urged to seek immediate shelter Friday night as the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado warning for several counties in the region.

The tornado warning, in effect until 11:30 p.m., was issued at 10:42 p.m. by the NWS office in Grand Forks. It covers southwestern Cass County, northern Ransom County, and southeastern Barnes County. A broader tornado watch also remains active until 3 a.m. Saturday, spanning much of eastern North Dakota and parts of northwest Minnesota.

According to officials, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was observed southeast of Valley City and moving eastward at approximately 25 mph. The storm system is also expected to bring golf ball-sized hail and dangerous winds.

Outdoor warning sirens were activated in both Tower City and Buffalo, North Dakota, as the storm approached. The NWS highlighted several potentially impacted areas, including Valley City, Tower City, Buffalo, Oriska, and Alice. Travelers on Interstate 94 between mile markers 310 and 318 in North Dakota — and parts of I-94 extending into Minnesota — are also advised to remain alert.

Heavy rainfall may hide this tornado. Do not wait to see or hear it. Take shelter immediately,” warned the National Weather Service.

The Red River Regional Dispatch Center emphasized critical safety protocols, especially for those in mobile homes or vehicles. People are advised to seek sturdy shelter indoors — ideally in a basement. If a basement isn’t accessible, the innermost room on the lowest floor, such as a closet or bathroom, is recommended.

Other safety tips include:

  • Stay away from windows.

  • Use pillows, cushions, or blankets to shield yourself.

  • Do not try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle.

  • If caught outside, find a ditch or low-lying area and lie flat.

Local emergency management teams continue to monitor the situation, and updates are expected throughout the night as conditions evolve.
