Goodbye to a TV Legend: Loretta Swit Passes Away at 87

Loretta Swit, the Emmy-winning actress best known for her role as Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on the iconic television series MASH*, passed away on May 30, 2025, at the age of 87.  She died of natural causes at her home in New York City, as confirmed by her publicist, Harlan Boll  .

Born Loretta Jane Szwed on November 4, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey, Swit began her acting career in the late 1960s after studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.  She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Major Houlihan on MASH*, appearing in 251 episodes over the show's 11-season run from 1972 to 1983  . Her performance earned her two Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe nominations  .


Swit's character, initially depicted as a one-dimensional figure, evolved into a complex, empowered woman, thanks in part to Swit's influence and the rising feminist movement of the time  . She worked closely with the show's writers to reshape Major Houlihan into a respected, multidimensional nurse, moving beyond the "Hot Lips" nickname that Swit found disrespectful  .


Beyond MASH*, Swit had an extensive career in television, film, and theater.  She appeared in popular series such as Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, and Hawaii Five-O, and had roles in films like Race with the Devil and *S.O.B.*  . She also had a successful stage career, earning the Sarah Siddons Award in 1991 and performing in Broadway productions like Same Time, Next Year and Mame  .


Swit was a passionate animal rights activist and a talented artist.  In 2017, she published SwitHeart: The Watercolour Artistry & Animal Activism of Loretta Swit, a book showcasing her watercolor paintings, with proceeds supporting anti-cruelty organizations  . She also founded the SwitHeart Animal Alliance, further demonstrating her commitment to animal welfare. 


In her personal life, Swit was married to actor Dennis Holahan from 1983 until their divorce in 1995.  She did not remarry and had no children  .


Swit's legacy extends beyond her acting achievements.  Her portrayal of Major Houlihan inspired many women to pursue careers in nursing and the military  . Her dedication to her craft, her advocacy for animal rights, and her artistic talents have left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry and beyond. 


She is survived by her close friends and former MASH* co-stars, including Jamie Farr, who referred to her as his "adopted sister" and expressed deep sorrow at her passing  .
